Unfettered Mind

‘Unfettered mind’ was written by Takuan Soho (泽庵宗彭) in the 17th century, he is a prolific figure in Zen Buddhism and is still being celebrated today, バガボンド by 井上雄彦 is one of it.

In his book, he shared how we should never be distracted by any particular aspect in combat. Failure of which, leads to us clouding our entire judgement, and losing the big picture in the end.

We shouldn’t put our mind into the opponent’s sword;

nor your own sword; nor in any particular space.

By not putting your mind in one place,

you’re putting your mind in every space possible.

Each word, a practice

The words maybe contextualized during times of conflict, but the intention is still very much inspiring today. We are in a constant state of struggle.

_

I turned the words into a Virtual Reality maze. Much like how the mind is a trap by itself when we don’t continuously practice.

“IT IS THE VERY MIND ITSELF. THAT LEADS THE MIND ASTRAY.”

EACH PAGE, A WALL

I rewrite each character from the book through calligraphy. Each character is a reminder to the mentioned practice.

Unfettered mind VR is a different take to spatial calligraphy. it’s where the ancient meets the future in the same space.

The entire artwork is handwritten via HTC Vive controllers in Google’s Tilt Brush.

Writing calligraphy in thin air puts my knowledge to a fun test, never before had I write with a trigger on a Virtual Reality controller too.

WITH EACH WALL, BECOMES A MAZE

THIS IS JUST A START, MORE TO COME.
